Jake's Berries
History

In the beginning there was corn and it was good.  It all began in 1998 when Paul, wanted to grow sweet corn like he did as a teenager.  Our first customers found our corn in a bathtub in our corncrib turned garage with a peanut butter money jar for self-service.  That first year we sold over 500 dozen and Detwiler Veggie Farm was established.
In 2004 we expanded and became Mitchell’s farm in Plain City, this is part of Shelly’s family farm that has been in the family for almost 200 years.  The following spring we planted more than 2500 raspberries by hand on almost 3 acres.  We planted Mac Black and Jewell which are our black varieties and Caroline our fall red.
The black varieties were planted in plastic covered beds to decrease our use of chemical weed control.   Between the rows are eight foot grass covered aisles.  Drip irrigation is installed beneath the beds and used to provide adequate water and nutrients to the berries.
Since then we've added a couple rows of fall gold, Jake's  berries and this spring due to your requests  we will add500 plants of a red raspberry to bridge the gap between black season and fall red.
We hope you'll also enjoy our edamame soybeans, red peppers, pumpkins, gourds.
Our family loves sharing with others where food comes from and our agricultural roots.
We hope you’ll come taste the difference!

Jake's Berries

I want to thank all the customers who came and picked over 2000 pounds of my berries.  You have helped make my second year a great success.  Last year I worked hard pruning, irrigating and picking berries.
I've learned the basics of how to run a farm and how to talk to you, my customers.  My favorite jobs on my raspberry farm are picking and selling the berries.
This raspberry project started as my FFA project.  This May, I competed for the top 4 in the State of Ohio for FFA fruit production.  I won and will be competing at the National level.  My business was one of the top 5 Young Entrepeneur in the country, thanks to you.  Check out a video of me on their website.  http://www.nfib.com/yef/yef-programs/young-entrepreneur-awards/yef-awards-winners Thanks to NFIB and Visa for this scholarship.  This experience of growing raspberries has brought me to my future career, a farmer.
I hope you'll come again this summer to my patch.
